Back in the olden days, people used to pair their elegant costumes with masks in order to hide their identity. However, this gave people the idea that they can do inappropriate acts and exhibit unpleasant behavior because there is no way for them to be identified, Thus, some fancy dress party organizers decided to ask their guests to come in wearing costumes, but without the masks on their faces. In the past, people also used to dress up as famous people like literary figures, politicians, and heroes. But now, they just opt to portray more ordinary characters like a bunny, a witch, a policewoman, or a fictional character.

However, people should not be mistaken for wearing ball gowns and cocktail dresses when they get an invitation to a fancy dress party. When you say “fancy dress”, people only mean that they would like you to come to the party wearing a costume or portraying the character of a person who is of great relevance in the society. Also, it would be better if guests could observe the proper etiquette of avoiding cross-dressing especially in places that are very conservative. This means that men should dress as men, and women should wear costumes that are also for women. But it still depends on the preferences of the party host if he or she would allow the guests to wear whatever they want.
