Feline Mammal List List of Animals That Purr
Felines’ are the name given to the family of cats. Felines come under the carnivorous category of mammals. The most commonly known felids are the domestic cats which are seen straying around. But the feline families are categorized into 2 subfamilies – the felinae and the pantherinae. Animals like the tiger, leopard, lions and jaguars come under the family of pantherinae while animals like the ordinary cats, the cheetahs, the cougars, and the lynxes come under the category of the felinae family. The families of felids are closely related to the linsangs which include the hyenas, the mongooses and the civets.
Felids are grouped under the category of obligate carnivores and they feed on meat and never taste sweet. Based on the phenotypical features, the families of felidae are grouped into 5 subfamilies of the Pantherinae, the Felinae, the Machairodontinae and the Proailurinae which have already become extinct, and the Acinonychinae. The researchers have found eight lineages based on the genes and their combinations in the felidae family. The lineage 1 includes the family of Panthera, Neofelis and Uncia, while lineage 2 consists of pardofelis and catopuma. Lineage 3 includes Caracal, profelis, and the Leptailurus and lineage 4 consists of the family of leopardus. Lynx comes under the lineage 5 and lineage 6 consists of puma and acinonyx. Lineage 7 consists of Otocolobus and Felis comes under Lineage 8.
