Eden Gardens The Second Largest Cricket Stadium in the World
Eden Gardens is not Garden of Eden as some may confuse it with. It is actually a cricket ground that is located in Kolkata, India. It has a very rich history, being established in the nineteenth century. By sitting capacity, it is the second largest cricket stadium in the world. About 62,000 people can sit in the stadium, and 130,000 can stand as the match is played. It is one of the stadiums owned by the Cricket Association of Bengal and is held as a big icon in India.
The crowds that come to cheer at the stadium are known to be very vociferous, and it is held by many as a rite of passage for as they say, any cricket player worth his salt has to play in the fully packed stadium first to know that he is actually a star. Eden Gardens is also the second biggest stadium in India, coming second to another stadium, Salt Lake Stadium, that is situated in the same city. It is usually an honor when a match is slotted to be played in the stadium, as so many activities take place there.
Before it became a full cricket stadium, some football derby matches used to be played there too. In order to finally meet the International Cricket Council standards, the Eden Gardens stadium was well renovated for the Cricket World Cup that was held in the year 2011. So many infrastructure improvements were done and players’ amenities added.
The roof, the walls, the clubhouse and many others were changed to give it a lovely new look that attracts tourists and locals that visit the place. In 1934, the first recorded test took place and in the year 1987, it was the venue for its first One Day International. In the world, it comes second to the cricket stadium in Australia.
