Large Mammals Interesting Facts and Information
The largest mammals in the planet earth are blue whale and elephant. These two mammals have very distinct features. Blue whale is the largest animal on the earth and elephant is the largest land animal. At present both these large mammals are dying out. Both these species are classified as endangered species. Both these silent mammals are hunted in large quantity. If people don’t stop hunting them soon both these species will be disappeared from the earth. We cannot afford to lose another species which is very special to us.
There are two types of elephants in the world, Asian elephants and African elephants. Elephants are present in large numbers in almost all parts of Africa and in some parts of Asia. There were about 1.3 million elephants in Africa now the number had come down to 500,000. The number of elephants in Asia is even lesser. Asian elephants can be easily tamed and they can be used to perform number of tasks like moving heavy objects etc. In India elephants are part of many religious ceremonies. For all these purposes people captures wild elephants. Main reason for the danger of extinction of these animals is hunting them for ivory trade. The tusk of the elephant is very priceless in international market. Thousands of elephants are killed every year for its tusks. Trading elephant tusks are restricted by law nowadays.
There were large number of blue whales in our oceans but today it is less than 10,000. There are many factors that put the survival of blue whales in danger. The main reason is Norwegian and Japanese whaling. Japanese people use whale meat and its oil. Hundreds of blue whales are killed each year. Apart from whaling ships strikes also pose huge threats to whales. Researchers and scientist all over the world is trying to save them.
