Established in 1864, this is perhaps one of the oldest stadiums in the world but despite this, it has been able to hold events successfully. This is due to a number of renovations that were carried out in order to ensure that Eden gardens meet the International Cricket Council standards. It should be noted that the stadium now holds a seating capacity of about 92,000 people after the renovations which is considerably less than the amount it held previously. Eden Gardens has also been witness to a number of extremely remarkable events in the history of sports. One such event is when Singh made a hat-trick against Australia to become the first Indian to do so in test cricket.

In its early years, the stadium hosted both cricket and derby football matches till around 1984 when it became exclusively for cricket games. Located in Kalkota, this stadium has been able to benefit the residents of the area in a number of ways. Through the sheer number of spectators that are attracted to this sporting ground, the area has been able to generate a lot of business. Some individuals have also been able to get jobs in the grounds which have aided them in earning a living.
