What is Knowledge? And How to Manage It?

Knowledge is the condition of knowing something. Knowledge means having a familiarity towards a certain thing which we have gained through education and experience. Besides the above-mentioned, simple definition, there are various other complex and philosophical definitions of knowledge that are available. One of the book definitions of knowledge is: “The understanding which someone possesses and uses to take an effective action in order to achieve his goals.” To understand the concept of knowledge in a better way, you need to understand the relationship between knowledge and information. Often it becomes hard to differentiate between a raw piece of information and knowledge.

Rational and Intuitive Knowledge

The terms “knowledge” and “information” are used interchangeably these days which is quite confusing at times. It is pertinent to mention here that the mind of humans is capable of accepting two types of knowledge. These types are: rational knowledge and intuitive knowledge. In this computer and scientific era, intuitive knowledge is often assumed as less important as compared to rational knowledge. Some experts are also trying to prove that intuitive knowledge is not a type of knowledge. The concept of knowledge in the West is quite different from the East, as in the Eastern world there is an importance on intuitive knowledge. In fact, in the Eastern concept of knowledge, intuitive knowledge is more important than rational knowledge.

Knowledge management is a new concept which was first introduced in the 1990s. “Knowledge management” means organizing your knowledge. The experts define “knowledge management” as “the process of distributing, capturing, and using the knowledge in more effective ways.”.Knowledge management is a complete field which is often referred to as “KM,” and it is defined in various ways.  However, the spirit of all the definitions remains the same. The basic purpose of knowledge management is to manage and organize the knowledge to use it in a more effective way. Ever since the concept was introduced, the field of knowledge management became popular, and now it becomes an important part of studying knowledge. Many of the consulting firms all over the world are using this concept in developing effective strategies for various organizations. The importance of knowledge management is increasing as we are living in the era of the Internet, and every day we are gaining a plethora of information through the Internet and social media. The need to manage the knowledge becomes unavoidable now. In this situation, knowledge becomes useless without proper knowledge management.

The primary goal of knowledge management is to capture the knowledge and make it available for other peoples in the organization so that they can also take advantage of this knowledge. If the information remains in the minds of people, it cannot be shared explicitly. So it is important that knowledge and information are shared and managed properly to achieve the maximum advantages from this information. It is assumed that in the coming years the concept of knowledge management will be popularized even more, and there is a lot of research required in this regard.
