Nowadays we are living in a world where science and technology play a fundamental role in our everyday life, as well as in the production system. Since this perspective it seems fairly difficult to understand the modern world without perceiving the intended meaning and role of these two essential elements: science and technology.

Therefore, people need a proper scientific and technological culture, enabling them to understand and approach the global nature and complexity of the current reality, as well as to obtain the necessary skills in order to interact with their surrounding environment (studies, work, etc.) and to cope adequately with them.

Society has become aware of the importance of science and technology and its influence on quite valuable issues such as environmental conservation, conditions to improve people’s quality of life, food and energy resources, health, transport, among others. It is no longer possible to leave these issues just in hands of scientific élite. It is necessary that large sectors of population understand better and better the universe they live in, so as to build collectively the best possible world.

The Importance of Science Education

Accessing scientific knowledge is of great significance considering people need to feel they have some control over technology’’ selection and maintenance being used in their lives. Furthermore, when it comes to find better ways for exploring nature’s potential without harming or stifling it, scientific knowledge becomes a critical asset. Moreover, it is important to keep in mind that science is an essential part of human’s culture.

Since this point of view, the acquisition of a methodology based on scientific inquiry, as well as in reasoned and critical judgment, must necessarily be part of any educational project. Promoting the formation of critical and reasonable people is the only way society will ensure the formation of citizens able to take their own decisions. Thus, introducing scientific and technological training as a key element in the general culture of future generations, allows for preparing them clearly to understand the world they are living in and take the necessary decisions for improving it.

The above exposed reasons serve as the foundation for demanding the introduction of science education in primary and secondary education. However, this claim should be complemented by a new approach to education in science, mainly focused on equity and quality, i.e., a high quality education, not just reserved for a few students. It is not longer acceptable the situation when just a small number of students are attracted to science subjects, while most part find them difficult or boring. While it is true that, depending on each subject, some students will follow classes better than others, the essential point is that whatever the knowledge students incorporate, they find it really useful for their lives.

Hence, the concern focuses on how it is possible to develop and encourage students’ ability to learn. Undoubtedly, science education is not the unique and exclusive element influencing and promoting this complex issue. Nonetheless, it can help young people acquire the adequate skills and tools to learn interpreting and acting on a world where only change can be considered as a something permanent.

It seems important children become aware of impacts and implications of science in their everyday life. On the other hand, science education should promote the development of children’s and teens’ observation, reasoning, analysis, abstraction and communication skills, allowing them to think independently. Furthermore, natural sciences’ contribution should facilitate students’ approach to nature, while supporting a better integration into their social environment. Moreover, it can also help students to explain everyday natural phenomena and provide them with the necessary tools to carry out rigorous and objective researches on different nature subjects.

Science fairs have precisely become one of those approaches that are being widely used in order to reach the desired results on science education.

Science fairs are widely known as a public display, exposure or demonstration of student’s projects on science and technology subjects. Generally speaking, a science project is a research performed by students using the scientific method to find answers to specific problems. Commonly students present their works, carry out demonstrations, explain the used methods, offer conclusions and finally answer questions of experts appointed to examine and assess them, by explaining and offering strong arguments. Usually, science fairs count with a jury evaluating and selecting projects in order to award prizes to the best ones.

Science fairs are implemented at different levels such as school, municipality, city, region, state, national or even international. The idea is that students begin presenting their projects at the lowest levels and those resulting winners will pass to higher levels.

The main goal of science fair projects is to train and guide children and teens in the use of scientific method, considering they encourage students’ social behavior, help them to explore their scientific vocation, develop their experimental skills, reflect their scientific level, and allow them to show their creative capacity.

At the same time, by promoting kids’ participation in science fairs, science projects support approaching of local communities and families to science and technology, while strengthening links with schools. Furthermore, they serve as a way for disseminating scientific knowledge and promoting exchange of points of views and ideas between students and scientists serving as examiners.

The scientific method refers to the process scientists use to solve a problem. Thus, the idea is students begin using this method from early ages. In order to prepare, carry out and present their science fair projects, students should perform the following steps:

  1. State a problem. This implies the students shall write clearly the problem they are addressing, what can be formulated by using a question.
  2. Present a hypothesis: A hypothesis is an assumption made by researchers, which could be possible or impossible, and allows obtaining a consequence. Thus, students ought to describe what they suppose will happen in their works, as well as other possible predictions, based on the literature review they should carry out.
  3. Elaborate a procedure: In this step students propose how they will solve the problem. In a Science Fair project there will be a lot of demonstration and experiment, effort to research on certain things, there will be lots of collection of certain specific scientific items, or even display of projects made using scientific methods. These projects will be exhibited for the viewers. These kind of fairs encourages students to do investigation in any science subject they are interested in and discovering new things. It also plays as a very good platform to show the new discoveries made by the students in the audience.
