Children are extremely curious about the world around them and how things work. However, as several specialized publications report, this fact has not been sufficiently explored. There are some specialists considering that, in most cases, presentation and quality of scientific content for children are inadequate and do not allow establishing meaningful relationships with environment.

Furthermore, these contents do not favor children’s acquisition of a clearer picture about the scientific activity, including its advantages and limitations. For instance, nowadays, textbooks are considered as one of the main sources of information for acquiring a basic knowledge about science and how it works. Nevertheless, as some specialists state, often these books present science as completely detached from everyday life and contain serious misconceptions.

Moreover, other important sources of scientific information for young audiences like comics, cartoons, TV programs and movies, frequently convey the image of a careless and mad scientist in a white coat, inventing artifacts which do not have a possible application. Other times, scientists are showed as wicked men, working on evil inventions or discoveries in order to harm our planet or human civilization.

Science forms part of everything surrounding us, therefore, it is quite important to teach it from an early age. Children are passing through an important stage of mental development, when much of knowledge they acquire will be part of their future life. This way, science education will enable children to improve their observation capabilities, as well as their approach to solve problems and find answers to questions by means of experimenting or inquiring. Additionally, it will help children to elaborate inferences, explanations and arguments supported by their direct experiences, what would help them to move forward and build new learning based on their already possessed knowledge and the incorporation of new information.

Hence, the formation of what is known as science kids constitutes an essential prerequisite for the development of future generations. They should count with a scientific culture enabling them to approach and understand the complexity of the contemporary world, as well as the necessary skills in order to face a complex daily interaction with the environment.

This means children will build mental models for entities that are not directly perceived as electricity, light, physical substances, etc. Through observation and experimentation, children will have an effective way to solve problems they can face in their everyday life.

Teachers should be able to interact and guide children in their search for answers to everything that may astonished them when interacting with the surrounding environment. Furthermore, they shall lead children to situations enabling them to experiment and discover in order to obtain a greater understanding of the surrounding reality.

For example, carrying out experiments allowing children to observe changes in the physical properties of certain substances when they are mixed, experiments demonstrating the existence of air, experiments showing energy changes in chemical reactions or even the systematic observation of living things are situations that can contribute to develop a scientific thinking in children. This kind of activities support the spontaneous and natural research ability children have and influence them to view the world in a scientific way.

Such scientific experiences, besides stimulating children’s interest for justifying scientifically curious facts and manifestations of natural phenomena taking place daily, introduce them to the scientific activities and offer children a vision for interconnecting laws and principles governing the physical world.

As several researches have shown, children’ science education ought to be organized following a spiral pattern, based on continuos learning cycles, that enable children to build new knowledge over the previously existing one. Therefore, as specialists point out, it is strongly recommended to induce and include an early age scientific literacy in children, as a different way to know reality around them. This will encourage children to develop thinking and working skills, that later would serve as an anchor for acquiring scientific concepts.

According to several specialized publications, these learning cycles should be based on the exploration of concrete phenomena, using children cognitive skills: observation, inference and experimentation. This will provide children with initial images or mental constructs linked to the concepts of these phenomena. Children will continue interacting with these phenomena under different perspectives and would refine their knowledge about them.

This way, new knowledge and concepts will arise. This approach must be subsequently applied to other situations in order to develop children’s understanding about science. As specialists state, this approach for teaching science should focus on the exploration of learning events, so that children can build scientific principles and laws based on their observations.

It is also significant to keep in mind that, specifically in the case of early years of schooling when children are six – eleven years old, those learning activities shall have a spontaneous and experiential character and focus on how to face and address everyday life situations. It is necessary to consider the development of scientific thinking along history, which shows that there was an initial period of pre-scientific application of the laws of nature.

Therefore, it seems logical that first years of primary education favour some experiential accumulation more than abstracts scientific concepts. This will prepare children for a later teaching of science. This way, scientific education would be consistent with the cultural evolution of human civilization, and it will support the formation of science kids, bringing cheer and hope for future generations.

Science is one of the fastest expanding fields of knowledge and there are lots of children who like to pursue it. But correct guidance at the tender age itself is the stepping stone towards a great interest in science. Science kids are a present trend emerging in the society. AS the opportunities are on the rise for children especially in schools and at home, there is a sudden inclination towards learning and knowing science among children.

Teachers at school as well as parents provide ample opportunities for educating a child in an all round way. To assist this, a variety of toys, puzzles and games related to science are introduced to the kids. Gradually; in a play way method they develop an interest.
