Lakewood church is an independent mega church founded by John Osteen and his wife Dodie in 1959.It is located in Houston, Texas. It is one of the largest Congregations in the country with more than 43,500 people attending the service every week.
History of Lakewood Church
This Evangelical church was founded initially inside an abandoned feed store in East Houston. John Osteen was a Southern Baptist minister who withdrew from the fellowship after experiencing a baptism in the Holy Spirit and started Lakewood church. John and Dodie also hosted a television program that was telecast in more than 100 countries. This made the church even more famous. After John’s death his son, Joel became the Pastor and carried on with the formalities of the church.
The congregation of the church further increased five times it used to be during his father’s time. The church was moved to a bigger and new location when Joel Osteen signed a long term lease with the city of Houston and acquired a huge sports arena, Compaq Center. With Joel Osteen as the pastor and his wife Victoria the co-pastor the church witnesses visitors from all the parts of the country every week.
What Does Lakewood Church Believe in?
The church is based on the preaching if Jesus Christ and believes in the Holy Bible. It practices the four commands mentioned in the Bible – Salvation, Water Baptism, Communion and True Relationship with Jesus Christ. The church also insists on word of Faith teaching. Depending on the age, marital status and requirements of the members, the church offers ministries, services and fellowships. Different services available for kids and adults are kid’s life, canvas, main services and C/30- the journey. Lakewood church central campus can accommodate 16,800 people. It conducts four services in English and two in Spanish every week.
