Her looks were supposed to be so powerful that it could turn any person whomever she looked at into stone. Because of her mortality, Perseus managed to kill her but cutting her head off. He could do this only by using mirror in place of his shield. Medusa saw her own image and turned into stone. Then Perseus was successful in cutting her head off.
